Kollu Rasam | Horsegram Tamarind Curry | Kongu Recipe | Step by Step

Kollu Rasam is a dish prepared in Kongunadu delicacy usually made to treat cold, cough and even aid weight loss. After marriage only I got to know about this recipe from my MIL and husband. My husband used to keep telling me about this rasam recipe that his mom usually makes at home. I was totally new to Kongu samayal and slowly I am learning how to make recipes one by one. Although there are various versions of this rasam online I am posting my own version here. My MIL usually grinds horsegram after cooking it and then adds to the curry but I used a mashed version of horsegram.

KOLLU RASAM RECIPE

Recipe Source ~ Own
Cook & Prep time ~ 20 mins
Serves ~ 4 people generously

Serving Suggestion - White rice, kootu, appalam and veg/nonveg side

Ingredients

Horsegram/ Kollu - 1/4 cup
Water to pressure cook kollu - 2 cups
Tamarind pulp - 2 lemon sized balls soaked in warm water for 10 minutes
Tomatoes - 2 chopped and mashed with hands
Rasam powder - 3 tsp
Salt - to taste
Oil - 2 tsp
Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp
Whole Jeera/cumin - 1/2 tsp
Curry leaves - 2 springs
Peppercorns - 1 tsp
Coriander leaves - chopped 3 tbsp
Small onions - 2
Garlic pods - 4-5

Method

  • Dry roast the horsegram on a pan until it becomes shiny, this takes about 3 minutes. Set aside to cool in the mean time add water to the pressure cooker and the roasted horsegram and let it cook for 10-12 hisses until in a stage that can be mashed

  •  Now open the pressure cooker, using a wooded laddle mash it until grainy. Set aside

  •  In a saucepan add the tamarind pulp water with 1 and 1/2 cup water and bring to a boil. To this add mashed tomato with salt (this gives additional flavour), as this mixture boils for 5 minutes add the mashed horsegarm and stir well.

  •  Now add rasam powder (if adding) and keep the stove on sim (lowflame) until it is nice and hot. This takes 3 minutes, switch off. Using a motar & pestel mash the onions, garlic, half jeera and half peppercorns until grainy yet mashed

  •  Now temper this mashed mixture with 1 tsp oil add to the prepared rasam, now temper mustard seeds, jeera, peppercorns, curry leaves and add to the prepared rasam. Add chopped coriander leaves with stems and cover with lid for 10-15 minutes for the flavours to develop

Serve hot with white rice, appalam and any veg/non veg side

Cooks Wisdom

- Adding rasam powder is upto you some like this rasam without much spice but I have added rasam powder
- Make sure once you do add rasam powder just let it heat up and not boil for 2 minutes and switch off temper, garnish with coriander and immediately cover with a lid and let it sit, this increases flavour and aroma in rasam
- Alternately you can soak horsegram/ kollu overnight and then pressure cook for 2 hisses and grind it to a paste / add directly to boiling rasam
- Some do not add onions to rasam but I added just 3 small onions for extra taste
