Tofu Tawa Masala Recipe
I love paneer & I love tofu equally since the latter is more healthy I end up picking tofu often than paneer. You can use tofu to make curries skipping paneer if you are diet concious. Nevertheless they both taste amazing. Unlike me, my husband was never a paneer person and of all the changes marriage does bring, food is a key factor that has changed us a lot. Now he loves paneer so much that he is finding it hard to eat tofu. That said I tried this Tawa Malasa as a virtual treat recipe from my dear friend +nalini suresh blog (naliniscooking.com). I was sure that my picky husband would definitely love this curry without any fuss and I was right ;-). A group of us blogger friends planned to surprise our dear friend Nalini with a virtual birthday treat, by trying one of her recipes and posting it in our blogs. I was a little late in the celebration but glad I did this curry. Nalini we both totally enjoyed this Tawa tofu masala and hope you had a wonderful birthday.

TAWA TOFU MASALA | TOFU TIKKA MASALA RECIPE


Recipe Source - Nalini

Prep time - 10 mins
Cook time - 15 mins
Serving suggestion - with chapati, paratha, romali roti

Ingredients

To Marinate

Thick Curd - 3 tbsp
Red chilli powder - 1/4 tsp
Turemric powder - 1/3 tsp
Salt - to taste

Oil - 2 tbsp
Paneer/ Tofu - 150 gms, cubed
Onion - 1 large, chopped fine
Tomato - 2 large pureed
Garam masala - 1 tsp
Red chilli powder - 1/2 tsp
Kashmiri red chilli - 1 tsp
Coriander powder - 1 tsp
Ginger garlic paste - 2 tsp
Water - 1 cup
Cream - 2-3 tbsp/ replace with curd for less fatty alternative
Green chilis- 2 chopped fine (adjust according to heat tolerance)

Method

1. Press the tofu on a kitchen towel to remove excess water. Cut into small cubes and in a bowl combine curd, turmeric powder, chilli powder, salt and add the tofu to them set aside for  10-15 minutes




2. In a wide pan heat 1 tbsp of oil and fry the tofu pieces in batches until the sides are cooked for 1-2 minutes. Repeat the same for the remaining tofu. In the same pan with the left over oil add chopped onions and green chillis add 1 tsp of salt and fry until translucent.




3. Once the onions are well fried add the masala powders - red chilli, kashmiri red chilli, corriander, jeera and stir well. Now add the ginger-garlic paste and cook for 2 minutes until the raw smell goes. Now add puréed tomato and mix well. Let it cook for 2 more minutes until well cooked




4. Now add the fried tofu to the masala and mix well until well coated. Now add 1  cup water and bring to a boil. Now add garam masala and mix well. After a minute add the cream and mix well let it simmer in low flame for a minute switch off and serve garnishing with kastoori methi/ coriander leaves




Cooks Wisdom


Tip 1


1. You can skip tofu and make the same curry with paneer

2. Make sure to remove excess water from the tofu by using a kitchen towel else the tofu will crumble easily

3. You can add kastoori methi leaves (dried) to the curd marinate for more flavour. I did not do this since my husband does not like died methi leaves

4. You can use left over curd marinate to thicken the curry instead of cream if you are diet concious
