I get lots of questions from friends and readers for healthy recipes, diet food and soups. I even have some who ask me if I never cook diet food :P. Talking about diet that is a totally a different subject which I am far to perfect to talk about. But all I can say is I do try healthy recipes at home and one such recipe is this broken wheat upma. Sometimes I temper it, other times I don't, I basically mix and match by even adding what ever vegetables I have at hand like ~ beans, carrot, peas, sweet corn or even greens like spinach. This for sure is a great alternative to rice and keeps you as full as rice, slow in digestion and when paired with vegetables you get the necessary fiber needed. I plan to share some healthy recipes in my little blog since that is also a part of me. I don't swear by bakes and rich food alone :-)
Serves ~ 2 generously
Cook & Prep time ~ 10 mins
Ingredients
Wheat rawa/ samba - 1 cup
Oil - 1 tsp
Mustard seed - 1/2 tsp
Curry leaves - 4-5
Chana dal - 1/4 tsp
Dry red chili - 2
Salt - as needed
Method
- In a non stick wok hear oil, add the mustard seeds and let it
splutter, then add chana dal, roast until it changes color. Now add red
chilli, curry leaves.
- Now add the broken wheat and roast for a minute in medium flame. Add
2 cups water and bring it to a boil. Cover lid and let it cook for 4-5
mins until the water evaporates and rava is cooked well.
Serve hot with sambar, dal or any curry
Cooks Wisdom
- you can totally skip the tempering part and make it plain if you have a curry to accompany the wheat rava
- you can add your preferred veg after roasting rava
Nothing can beat this upma, its my all time favourite, just love with spicy coconut chutney.
